Living Forgotten Realms

RPGA's latest (and only) shared world campaign, using the new 4th edition rules. RPGA Info here. The campaign launched at Gencon 2008 (August).

New and Improved LFR at CARP

It's finally here! A systematic way to play LFR, which will allow you to grow your character while playing modules in a logical progression! Starting with the May LFR Game Day (May 14), we'll offer modules in two distinct tracks.

In Slot 1, we'll be playing throughout the central regions of Faerun (Dragon Coast, Cormyr and The Dalelands.) Your characters will start at Level 1, and be able to work their way up through Level 11 and beyond, catching all the Quests and Specials along the way. Your PCs don't need to be native to any of these regions; but you may want to think about how or why they happen to be in Westgate, which is where their adventures will begin!

In Slot 2, we'll be playing along the Sword Coast (Luruar, Baldur's Gate, Waterdeep and the Moonshae Isles.) This time, your characters will be starting at Level 4/5–so bring an existing PC, if you have one of the appropriate level, or create one at Level 5 according to the updated Character Creation Rules! Since we'll be skipping the modules that contain the beginnings for a number of the Quests for these regions, you may want to bring an existing PC that has already played in the appropriate H1 modules (CORE 1-3 "Sense of Wonder"; WATE 1-5 "Lost in the Fog"; and LURU 2-3 "Forgotten Crypts, Hidden Dangers"), if completing the Quests is important to you. If that's not possible, talk to us–we may be able to find a way for your character to 'make up' those mods. Your adventures will start in Everlund (Luruar)!

We're looking forward to giving you a 'Home Campaign'-style experience in the world of LFR! So come and join us! (And, please, contact us if you aren't able to join us right at the beginning, but want to jump in somewhere else along the way! We'll do our best to get you caught up to the rest of the group, if that's necessary!)

Character Sheets

There are a lot of DnD 4th ed character sheets on the internet. I've culled a selection of the ones I like best.

Enhancements

Various things that might make the game easier or more fun to play.

  • Blank editable power cards PDF.
  • Power Cards All - huge pdf file (9 mb or so)
  • PHB Power Cards .pdf file - these are laid out like Magic cards, and include not only powers, but everything that might be related to your character. Be sure to read the "Read Me" file. (added 10/23/08)
  • Power Cards Source Files .ppt - these are the source files for the Magic card style cards. If you have Microsoft Powerpoint, you can follow the tutorial and make your own cards. If I only had more time, I'd make cards for the Forgotten Realms Player guide! (added 10/23/08)
  • Cheat Sheet pdf cheat sheet.

  • Magic in the Realms History from RPGA.
  • Year of the Ageless One History from RPGA.

LFR Play

RPGA Adventures Page In the Living Forgotten Realms campaign, play of a specific adventure is not limited to once per player. Rather, you can play each adventure once for each character you possess (assuming that character qualifies to play the adventure). You can also play an adventure after youve run it as the Dungeon Master. If you play an adventure again, just let the DM know at the beginning of the game that youve already played it, and dont ruin the surprises for anyone else that might be experiencing the adventure for the first time.

Adapted Adventures

Occasionally, the Living Forgotten Realms campaign staff will adapt an adventure produced by Wizards of the Coast. These adventures are either for sale at your local store or are available through Dungeon magazine on D&D Insider. When an adventure is adapted, it means that you must obtain a copy of the adventure independent of the RPGA ordering system to DM it. When you order the adapted adventure from the RPGA database, youll receive the documentation needed to play the adventure for Living Forgotten Realms

  • Barrow of the Ogre King
For many years, goblins have laired in a nearby dungeon hidden in the boughs of the Southwood. This dungeon is known to some as the Barrow of the Ogre King. It is up to your newly-formed band of adventurers to deal with the threat the goblins pose and discover why theyve attacked the town. An adventure set in Loudwater for characters levels 1-2. This adventure is found in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide.

  • FR1 Scepter Tower of Spellgard
A mysterious presence has taken up residence in one of the towers of Spellgard, and now its dark minions plague the Gray Vale! Scepter Tower of Spellgard is the first full-length Forgotten Realms adventure published for 4th Edition D&D. When paired with the adventure that appears in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, this adventure provides the Dungeon Master with all he needs to get his campaign started. This stand-alone adventure is designed to take characters from 2nd level to 5th level.

Campaign Scenarios

All of these adventures are designed to be played in about 4 hours a nice fit for an evening game or for convention play. Each adventure has a level range in which a character must be of that level to participate a character too high or too low cannot play the adventure. Campaign adventures are either regional adventures (they are set in one of the regions your character could choose as a background) or core adventures (adventures from areas outside of the LFR regions).

Special Adventures

Twice a year, at D&D Experience and Gen Con Indy, the RPGA releases a special adventure a double-length (8 hours) adventure thats generally a little more challenging than our campaign adventures. These adventures are designed to be showcased at select conventions after the big shows, but are playable anywhere a few months after they premiere. Watch our news page for more information about where you can find these specials! The list of currently scheduled special adventures for the 3rd quarter of 2008 is below.

In a spirit of clarification, member Vic says:

I've noticed that a number of groups/players/etc (including my home group, to be honest) have gotten confused about certain aspects of the Zhent quest/special stuff.
So, in an attempt to dispel confusion, here goes:
1) The two modules, Spec 1-1 and Spec 1-2, can be played by anyone of the appropriate level. 1-4 and 7-10, respectively. There are no entry requirements for either module. They are both 2-round modules and will definitely fill your day.
2) The Ques 1-1 module can only be played with characters that have accomplished the Zhentarim Infiltration quest card. It's a 7-10 single-round module.
3) The third task on the quest card requires the PC in question to have completed the first two tasks before it can be completed itself. There are ample opportunities to complete all three, but the order IS important.
3a) There is an opportunity to accomplish task 3 in the Spec 1-1 module.
This is what leads people to think that Spec 1-2 is the quest module (since you finish the quest card in spec 1-1 and then go play spec 1-2, right?) but that's not the case. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's a second chance to accomplish task 3 in Spec 1-2.

So...
* Play Spec 1-1 at any time with any H1 PC. Period.
If said PC is gung-ho about the Zhent quest card, make sure they either have parts 1 and 2 already done first or plan to play other mods that include those parts and part 3.
* Play Spec 1-2 at any time with any H3 PC. Period.
You'll get a more complete storyline if said PC has played Spec 1-1, since they are loosely connected. If said PC is still working on the Zhent quest card, make sure they have parts 1 and 2 already done, as this is probably your last chance to complete part 3.
* Play the Ques 1-1 with an H3 PC that has completed the quest card.

  • SPEC1-1 Shades of the Zhentarim
Zhentil Keep is a city with a storied history, even if most of the tale is not fit for innocent ears. A mission to find the wayward son of a wealthy merchant leads deep into the secrets, deceptions, and brutal power on which the dreaded Zhentarim built their ominous keep. A Living Forgotten Realms two-round special adventure set in Zhentil Keep for characters levels 1-4. (available January 9, 2009)

Quest Adventures

These special adventures are playable by those who complete the tasks on a quest rewards card, unlocking a special play opportunity. Quest rewards cards are available through the RPGA Rewards program. There are no quest adventures planned for 2008, but 2009 will bring QUES1-1 Black Cloaks and Bitter Rivalries to those that have successfully completed the Zhentarim Infiltration mission.
